Stress is an inevitable part of life, we all deal with stress on a daily basis in some form or another. It is well known that the long term effects of constant stress can wreak havoc on the body and our skin is no exception. We can see the skin's reaction to stress through blemishes, sensitivities, redness, dermatitis, dryness, fine lines and premature aging. But how and why do these stress symptoms show up in our skin and what are some solutions to help to ease them? Use these strategies to help your skin stay calm and collected under the pressure.

*To begin this article, repairing the damage of stress  in the skin must start from the inside. Identify the root of your stress, eat healthfully, sleep well and live actively. Although topical treatments are wonderful additions to help ease the symptoms of stressed skin, they are simply not enough.  If stress is an ongoing problem, seek professional  advice as the effects both internally and externally can be quite devastating in a prolonged state.

Blemishes

Stress and the surge of hormones that come with it can cause a complete imbalance in the skin, leading to inflammation and the over production of sebum, the result is blemishes and excess oil.

Strategies for prevention

  • Avoid hot water when cleansing, use cool water instead
  • Do not pick or touch the skin
  • Always wash the skin morning & evening
  • Always moisturize after cleansing
  • Use gentle yet purifying skincare that will help balance the complexion, without over drying

( Zap antibacterial cleansing bar and Zap lotion are a wonderful duo to help ease acne and inflammation)

Dryness & Dehydration

The hormone cortisol which increases with chronic stress, not only wreaks havoc on the inside, but on your outside too. High levels of cortisol decrease the body's ability to produce hyaloronic acid (an essential to keeping your skin plump and hydrated) and makes it difficult for the skin to retain water. The outcome of these compromised functions is dry, dehydrated and lack luster skin.

Strategies for prevention

  • Always keep your skin moisturized and have a cream with you for immediate application when you feel your skin getting that uncomfortable tight feeling
  • Avoid makeup and other skincare which can be drying to the skin
  • Skip washing your face in the morning with cleanser and gently splash the skin with warm water or use a Konjac sponge without your cleanser, immediately follow with your moisturizing regimen
  • Incorporate a mask or serum into your skincare for deeper layer moisturising and repair (Rejuvenating elixir with deeply nourishing oils will help repair your skin)

Redness, sensitivities and Eczema

These inflammatory skin conditions are intensely aggravated by stress. Increased blood flow, weakened immunity, along with unknown reasons can cause flare up's of Rosacea, Eczema and all around skin sensitivities during times of stress.

Strategies for prevention

  • Be gentle with your skin and avoid harsh exfoliants, peels or treatments
  • Allow your skin time to breathe and repair by limiting the use of heavy makeup
  • Use gentle, reparative skincare that will help nourish and balance the skin without being overwhelming ( Restoral healing skin ointment is an amazing product to help repair and soothe the skin )

Fine lines and Wrinkles (premature aging)

When cortisol is released in the body, it causes an increase in blood sugar which leads to Glycation. Glycation effects the skin by damaging collagen and elastin, which are key to keeping our skin resilient, firm and wrinkle free.

Strategies for prevention

  • Supplementation of antioxidants can be very helpful in reducing the effects of glycation in the skin, speak to a Naturopathic doctor to decide which ones could be beneficial for you
  • Use topical treatments that will help hydrate the skin and encourage healthy production of collagen and elastin. Masks, serums and reparative creams will all be beneficial (Restoral Ointment will deeply nourish, protect and encourage healthy skin function)

Remember that stress will always be a part of our lives, this is out of our control. How we deal with stress and continue to persevere healthfully is our choice and we  make the decision of how stress will affect us.

Live well, be kind and stress-less, your skin will thank you for it!
