Growing up, children are eager to rush into adulthood. And as we grow older, we become more independent, thoughtful and knowledgeable. Yet why is it that when we become adults, we lose some of the traits that make children so playful, sincere, and wise beyond their years?
There are lots to learn from children; here is list of 10 lessons that children can teach us, and help us become happier adults.
- 1) Sense of wonder and curiosity
As a child, everything is new and full of wonder. Children are always asking “why?”, yet as an adult we tend to forget to ask questions. There is still much in this world to learn before we stop asking questions.
- 2) Playfulness
Just because you’re an adult doesn’t mean you have to stop playing! All work and no play makes Jack a dull (and unhappy) boy.
- 3) Easily forgive
Ever notice how children can be crying one moment, but laughing the next? As adults we’re guilty of harbouring grudges, when it’s often better to forgive and forget.
- 4) Living in the moment
Ah, the freedom of the now.
- 5) Enjoying small pleasures
Have you ever seen a child eat an ice cream cone? Or how delighted they are to find a quarter? It’s often the little things in life that bring the most joy. We could do better by taking time to cherish the small things.
- 6) Fearlessness
If you’ve ever seen a kid fly past you on a pair of skiis, then you know what this one is about! But don’t worry if you’re scared, just fake it till you make it. After all, being brave isn’t not feeling fear; it’s feeling scared but carrying on regardless.
- 7) Expressing feelings
Somehow when we get older, it gets harder to talk about how we feel. But much can be gained from expressing our concerns, fears, hopes and dreams.
- 8) Holding hands
This says it all.
- 9) Confidence
Not all, but many children have an abundance of self-confidence that dwindles in adolescence and adulthood. Rekindle that fire of self-confidence, and let the star that you are shine through.
- 10) Unconditional love
Not much is stronger than the unconditional love a child has for their parents, puppy, or special toy. Let’s pay it forward and cherish the loved ones in our lives.
Hopefully this list will encourage you to release you inner child - go splash in puddles, tell more jokes, and hold hands again.
