Greeks and Romans did not use lavender merely to perfume their bath water with its lovely scent; they used it for its cleansing, antibacterial properties and to calm their frightening, angry gods.

Today, we still use lavender for stress, for cleansing, to boost our immune systems and in perfume. Lavender is, however, so much more dynamic than this. With over 1200 known components in its makeup, it’s no wonder that this herbaceous and floral essential oil is the most well-known, most popular and most versatile of all essential oils.

Steam distilled from the flowers, buds and leaves of the plant lavandula angustifolia, lavender, according to some, is a cure-all. At Saje, you will find lavender in over half of our products. Offering relief from headaches, pain, inflammation, nervous tension, circulatory issues, insomnia and anxiety, lavender is great on its own but it is even more powerful when blended with other oils.

Lavender is a cicatrisant, which means it stimulates cellular regeneration. This is part of what makes it so effective in healing topical wounds and burns and why it is found in so many skin care products for the face and body.

One could even say that lavender is responsible for the existence of Aromatherapy. The serious burn that René-Maurice Gattefossé suffered from in his chemistry lab in 1910 caused him to plunge his hand into the nearest container of liquid, which happened to be lavender. To his surprise, and delight, he suffered almost no scarring or pain. This experience caused him to coin the term Aromathérapie and to dedicate his research to studying the antibacterial and antiseptic properties of essential oils.

He used a variety of essential oils, including lavender, thyme, lemon and clove to treat injured soldiers in French military hospitals during World War I. He was very influential in developing cultivation and distillation methods of lavender in France. He also played a part in creating the very first lavender growers' cooperative. Over 100 years later, many people around the globe share his passion for essential oils, which all began with lavender.
